About Melody Stazzone
The kitchen was the heart of the New Jersey home where I grew up, and the dinner table was the stage where my Italian-American family put on a nightly
performance. Dinner at the Stazzone house was a grand and passionate event. It was like a night at the opera, with both the comedy and the heavy drama included!
In our family, the capocuoco (the “head cook”—in Italian) was not my mother but my father, who passed on to me his passion for food. He taught me to embrace the challenges of cooking, and not to be afraid of them. He also taught me to cook with love. My dad always told me that a great way to show your love for people is to cook great food for them.
We were also fortunate to live near a family farm that introduced me to organic produce long before it became popular. Most of what we ate was “fresh off the vine,” and I still incorporate fresh ingredients in my cooking today. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Economics at Hunter College in New York City. For several years I worked in financial services, and frequent business trips to Asia and Europe for my job introduced me to astonishing flavors that opened my heart once again to the idea of becoming a chef.
